I have been thinking a great deal about the relationship between Olivia and Orsino, since it is one of the strongest (most talked about) throughout the play, but the two don't come face to face until the last scene. Part of my backstory, is that similarly to the political pressures Queen Elizabeth encountered from her male council who wanted her to marry in order to maintain alliances and produce an heir, Olivia is under the same pressure. I think Olivia's council have been pressing her to take Orsino as a husband.
This infuriates Olivia, because not only has she never met the man, she has told her council that she will not even see a man until she is done mourning in 7 years. Olivia can sense that nobody takes her mourning seriously, and doubts her earnestness - which is why she is so stoic and driven. Her Mourning is also derived from the guilt she has over her dead lover.
The other major part of my backstory, is that Olivia says she is in mourning for her brother, but in truth she is mourning her once lover who was hung for suspected treason (Essex).
